Digital Matchmaker

By Jayde Johanssen

Nearly everyone wants to find love, whether they will admit it or not. One of the scariest thoughts surrounding dating and finding love is how difficult it can be to find the "right" person out there in the big, wide world.

The amount of people that individuals meet everyday means that there is a higher chance that they will meet someone compatible, but that is not a guarantee due to the diversity of the world's population. For people who tend to keep to themselves, the prospect of finding someone that they click with perfectly is even more intimidating and difficult.

Another deterrent for some people is the notion of having to go to bars and clubs in order to find someone special. These kinds of places are where many individuals go in the hopes of meeting a potential mate, though they are not the most romantic of locations. While there are typically a large number of people at these places, loud music and alcohol do not make them idealic settings for people to have real, substantive conversations. People who have a deep hatred for these places might have a more difficult time embarking into the dating world since their preferred place to be is inside their house.

The explosion of the internet over the past decade or so has led to the creation of countless companies looking to make life as convenient as possible for people. This idea of convenience covers everything from online grocery shopping to finding apartments and taking virtual tours. This also includes providing people with the opportunity to entrust their love lives to online dating companies that boast about their expertise and success rate.

There is an online dating company to suit almost anyone's needs, but people still need to maintain a critical eye to make sure they are getting what they are looking for. Some sites like eHarmony do all of the work for a person, not even allowing them to browse for themselves.

People must fill out an elaborate personality test in order to be matched up with someone who is compatible. This site even rejects individuals who they cannot find compatible partners for, which is something that speaks to its credibility but is also a bit frightening for individuals who already have a hard time meeting people who they click with.

Other sites give users more freedom over who they choose to date. Clients can browse through other people's profiles in search of individuals who peak their interest. They can communicate with those who interest them via e-mails and chatting through the site.

People who have a very specific idea of what exactly their mate should be like can visit sites that are specifically designed to meet their needs. There are sites that focus on a particular race, religion, financial well being, and numerous other distinct qualities that some people are looking for.

While a lot of the individuals who use online dating websites want a real relationship, there are others who simply use it as a way to juggle multiple partners simultaneously.

This unfortunate truth just means people need to exercise caution. - 32510
